Staff

Our teacher is Mrs Chapman and our teaching assistant is Mrs Whalley.  Mrs Cooper also supports in class when Mrs Whalley covers. Mrs Ballan is our lunchtime assistant.

Start and finish times

Start – 8:45    We do quick maths every morning at 8.45 so please be on time.

Finish – 3:15

Lunches

Please order your child's lunch at home on Arbor.  Even if your child has a packed lunch, you need to select this option on arbor.  This is your responsibility to do. Ordering dinners in class takes up our valuable learning time!

Reading and home learning expectations

Children will have a reading book which is closely linked to their phonics group.  Please read with your child as often as possible at home and sign their diary x3 week.  The children earn stickers and awards for reading at home.  Children will read with an adult in school as often as possible, for some children this may be every day.  Each child has a set day to read and change their book but they should bring it in every day!

Your child’s progress in reading will be helped hugely by reading at home.  This will form part of their homework, reading at least 5 minutes each night with an adult is the goal.

Children can change their library books every Tuesday in school.  Please remind them to have it in their bags on a Tuesday.

Please help your child to learn their x tables.  In Y2 they have to learn their 10x, 5x and 2x tables.  Start off with 10x.  We will do a weekly x table test on a Friday. A copy of their test will be sent home so that you can see how they have done and what to help them with for the following week.

PE kits

PE is on a Wednesday and Friday.

Children need to wear a plain white t.shirt, black shorts/joggers/leggings and pumps/trainers.

If they are wearing laces, make sure they can tie them themselves! :-)

They should wear their normal school jumper/cardigan.

Please come to school in PE kit on PE days.

PLEASE LABEL ALL ITEMS OF PE KIT AND UNIFORM!

 Our Curriculum

Autumn 1

In Maths we are learning to read, write and count numbers to 100. A big part is understanding place value and knowing how many tens and ones are in a number.
In English we are writing a letter to a traditional story character, based on the book: The Jolly Postman.
In Reading we will start whole class reading. This is where we all read the same text and children have opportunity to read to their partner and read aloud to the class.
In Science we are learning all about materials.  Children will be able to name an object and say what it is made out of.  They will describe the properties of materials and how they can be changed. We look at the suitability of materials and if they are fit for purpose.
In RE our big question is, 'Who is Muslim and what do they believe?'
In History, we have a jam packed term! We learn more about The Great Fire of London, looking at why people acted the way they did. We also cover Remembrance Day and why it is significant. Finally The Gunpowder Plot sparks lots of interest and questions.
Our Music unit is called 'Call and Response' with an animal theme. Children will use instruments to represent animals, copying rhythms and creating call and response rhythms.
Our Geography unit is called 'Why is our world wonderful?' and children will recap the 4 countries of the UK, their capital cities, the seas around the UK and locate the seven continents.  Children will learn the 5 oceans in the world and identify landmarks and compare human/physical features.

In Art we will be creating maps in artistic ways using a variety of techniques.

In Computing we are learning about IT around us and how to stay safe online.

PSHE is all about feelings and friendships.

Snack information

Please ensure you bring a water bottle to school every day filled only with water. There will be fruit available for snack at break time. Please only bring healthy snacks, no chocolate or crisps.

Communication

We communicate through Class Dojo, if you need me do not hesitate to drop me a message.

You can upload pictures to your child's portfolio. I may create a folder for a specific task.

Homework

Please bring your reading books to school every day. Homework will be given out on a Friday and should be returned to school by Wednesday.  Homework will always be:

reading

spellings  (spellings are tested on a Friday and link to our phonic lessons)

maths (linked to this weeks learning in class) and continued practice to learn x tables.

topic - this might be Geog/Hist/Science from the week

I will often share good examples of homework in the weekly update.

Please support your child to do their homework. It develops good habits.

Other information

I have my PPA on a Tuesday. This is once every two weeks. On this day Mrs Whalley will be teaching and Mrs Cooper supporting.

Links to Support Learning

I may add video links in the weekly update/portfolio that link to that weeks lessons.

Online resources

www.topmarks.co.uk- loads of good games for all maths units but I think they have made it a paid for app/subscription now.

www.ictgames.com-  lots of games to explore and resources.  This is probably best on a laptop, I haven't tried it on a phone.

Times Tables Rock Stars – Times Tables Rock Stars (ttrockstars.com)  Children will have their log in on the inside cover of their reading diary/homework book.

White Rose app (this is really good!) It's called 1 Minute Maths. I really recommend this.

Primary resources, homework help and online games - BBC Bitesize This is good for Science and History topics.

www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks1/science  Direct link to Science..  You can select the current topic for Science, watch a video and complete a quiz.

Please monitor any online games that your child can access. Ensure that parent restrictions are enabled and limit the amount of screen time that they have.

Thank you for you continued support
